Nokia N82

Saturday, July 5th, 2008

The Nokia N82 seems like the next flagship of the Nokia N-series of multimedia-oriented smartphones. Although it looks pretty much the same as Nokia N95 specs-wise, it outmatches the current heavyweight champion with a xenon flash and automatic screen rotation. While automatic screen rotation for the Nokia N95 seems to be just around the corner, there’s nothing that can beat the xenon flash on those night party shoots. The Nokia N95 however has recently received some 8 gigs worth of stash for your multimedia needs plus a gorgeous 2.8-inch display. So it is a fight that’s somewhat uneven, the two cannot be compared directly. Maybe the form factor will be decisive and user preference will take it from there. nyways, the Nokia N82 is a highly sought after device, and we are more than happy to have finally laid our greasy hands on it.

We are working on a fully-fledged review that should be ready some time next week. We wanted to share with you our first Nokia N82 images plus several other goodies.

First off, we present you the Nokia N82 photos. We gotta admit the N82 is not the prettiest of handsets but it looks alright - especially having in mind it’s loaded with features. You can’t see silvery Nokia phones often, but the Nokia N82 is one of them. Some of us would have preferred black and hope there’s a black version coming in the future (you didn’t hear us say 8GB.

Nokia’s E Series Gains the E66 and E71

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

Today Nokia officially announced two new additions to its E series business-focused devices, the E66 slider and the E71 bar-phone with full QWERTY keyboard. They share a large number of features. Both have quad-band GSM/EDGE radios and several 3G profiles, with each coming in a 3.6Mbps WCDMA/HSDPA 850/1900 North American variant. Bluetooth 2.0+EDR with stereo support and Wi-Fi are included. They run the Nokia S60 operating system with Feature Pack 1. A 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus and flash is standard on both phones, as is GPS, 2.5mm headset jacks and microSD support for cards up to 8GB. Both are loaded with Nokia’s business software, such as a VPN client and support for Exchange. Both phones also share the E series styling first seen on the E51. They will be available in the third quarter
* E66: This slider phone is the successor to the E65. Its stand out feature is that it has an accelerometer built in, and will auto-rotate the screen when it is turned sideways.
* E71: This phone is the progeny of the E61/62. It is smaller than the E61/62, but still has a full QWERTY keyboard for typing messages.

Nokia’s Aeon Cellphone Concept

Monday, May 26th, 2008

Nokia has released images of Aeon, a concept phone that combines two touch-sensitive panels mounted on a fuel-cell power pack.

Each of the panels is capable of being used independently. The touch-screen displays man that all ‘buttons’ are virtual, so in one situation one panel could operate as the display, the other as the keypad. In another the roles could be reversed. Or each display could serve both functions.

Devices like this are all part of Nokia’s vision of ‘wearable technology’. Users could wear the lightweight panels as a badge, or connected to a wrist-strap. Nokia are also keen to set up a new wireless standard. Wibree is essentially an upgraded Bluetooth which would allow the Aeon to be a ‘thin-client’, farming out processing and storage tasks to static servers.

Nokia’s research and development team have kicked it up a gear with an attractive “aeon” concept phone showing up in the R&D section of the company’s website. The most prominent design feature of aeon is a touchscreen that stretch over the full surface area of the phone, similar to BenQ-Siemens’s Black box idea phone we saw recently. Currently mobile technology isn’t quite up to realizing this fantasy, but we’ll sleep better tonight knowing that at least one of the cell phone industry’s biggest names shares the same dream as we do — BenQ’s dream didn’t count, unluckily.
